leaktrac questions
poolchoice - 22-9-08 at 04:15 PM

I have a leaktrac 2100 and i am have found a few leaks with it, but i have a simple question for the pros.
I have a customer who is losing 1/2" more than normal. I used the leak trac on the liner and found nothing.
My dye seemed to flow to the light gasket, and I found a few small bubbles on the gasket(is this a clue?), so I used flex sealant around the light.
I am waiting to hear if this solved water loss.
But my question is, when checking the main drain line, I had no air in the pump basket, so i assume "no leaks" is main drain line. But when I hold the leaktrac over the main drain, it makes the noise of a leak present. I shut the plastic valve at the pump, but is their another item in the main drain that will create a ground. I assume the hydrostatic releif valve is plastic.
It doesn't seem to be effected by the screws. I have held the leaktrac in inlets and heard the "noise" from the pump/filter ground, but if I shut the plastic valve, I thought I would not hear the "noise".

the gasket around the main drain , may be leaking, the hydrostatic valve may be leaking and occasionally suction lines leak and dont draw air in.

a hayward hydrostatic valve does contain a metal spring inside. Others valve are a see saw type snap in type setup ( by the way is a lousy design in my book) and have no metal in them. Most of the construction of any hydrostatic valve is plastic. Sounds like someone is going in the water.

Pool choice. One question. Do you do any underwater work in your venue? Scuba or do you use the anderson Super Snorkel Tankless Dive Unit or other similiar device. Just curious.

I had another person dive this pool, and he found nothing. I currently have not used diving equipment as the leak trac has helped me find holes in liners and most were easy to fix by swimming.
The problem with the leak trac is indentifying a leak in the steps, light and main drain. I have found a couple of situations where diving is needed. Which is why I plan on purchasing a Super Snorkle( or similiar, any suggestions?) in the spring as our season is about over for this year.

Most main drain gaskets, in my experience, will give a leak type signal as the cardboard gaskets are wet and are making ground contact hence the tracker "sees" a leak. Turn your gain down to low when you experience such a situation. If there IS a leak you will still get some noise. The same thing happens around faceplates, skimmers and returns, not to mention fiberglass step screws. There is a learning curve, like with any new "tool, and you have to understand what is causing the machine to give you a signal.

If it is a leak, you should be able to hear it on low, although you may only find it on high.

Have you pulled the light and checked in the housing? you said your leaktrac picked up a leak at main drain it will give that signal at the srews for some reason,if it's a vinyl pool it will not have a hydrostatic valve. I rarely get out my leaktrac If the ground is not saturated you wont get the signal the best thing to do is dive... $buy a regulater rig it for an air hose and use a oil free compressor with some scuba goggles you'll be amazed how easy it is to find the smallest pin hole if you can't find nothing there using a mirror check all the return fittings. Dont alway's trust the leaktrac it has let me down...... I will receive email on reply be glad to help

Thanks for your info. My email address is Poolchoice@zoominternet.net
You make it sound like I wouldn't need to buy a "complete" compresser underwater system. Is there a place (or places) that i could get individual componets and save money?
