Help Locating Pipes
marksomers - 17-12-09 at 06:22 PM

Please can anyone advise me on an inexpensive method to help find the direction of the pipes under the ground on a long run, I have the XLT17 to help me locate the leak in the pipes but i need to locate the pipe.... very frustrating! :(

How inexpensive? Divining is free, you just need a "y" shaped stick.
I went to ebay and bought a used Goldak locator for about $300 it works great locating pipes.

Its the 5500? I think. I use the bullet transmitter to get location and depth.

Some guys on here use aircraft cable and a clamp on to get the pipe run located

mark,

so are the majority of the pipes in the us.

i use coated aircraft cable, fishtape or just recently the nylon/wire portable electric stock fences.

Thanks once again for the reply eyemleaky, I have read about the aircraft cable and the elec. shock fence wire but I need to know what machines you guys find these cables with, a make and model number would be most helpful. Thanks again

lance has the emery biddle locator. there are many commercial pipe and cable locators that basically use a radio signal that is induced into the line, directly or indirectly. each machine differs in how they detect the signal. lances machine uses nulls and a sound that is generated that identifies the location and depth of the pipe. other higher end pipe locators actually compute the depth and signal strength on the readout. some of these machines can be expensive costing well over two thousand dollars for a unit. other units include metro tech and goldak as well as other brands. e mail me at almleakdetection@hvc.rr.com

mark,

for most of your locating needs an inexpensive irrigation or cable tracer will fit your needs.

i own tempo/progressive, 3m, pro-tech, fisher and greenlee. the locator i use the most is a tr4110 that i bought new as a discontinued item for about $100.00

these are available on auctions such as ebay.

i would set a price that your comfortable with, say $500-$700.00

www.armadatechnologies.com is a good place to look, they bought pro-tech and have improved it's line.

www.armadatechnologies.com is not currently up.

eyemleaky - 12-2-10 at 09:04 PM

i found out today, www.armadatech.com is correct

mark, all of the locators are locating the wire, cable or fishtape i think somehow this has gotten confused.

u2u meif you need, i might have a website in aust. for you
