Something of interest VGB

I had some spare time and while surfing the net i came accross a blog or thread that divers normally go to. came accross a blog where one diver who cleans boats out west was asked by an apartment complex to install drain covers. He agreed to and started to do the work. Some one contacted him and asked about the measurements He had no clue. what this meant and started to get nervous. That is the reason for his posting on the web "anyone know about pools and the drain covers" I felt compelled to contact him. I got his website and phone number and talked to the chap. Descent fellow, never worked in the pool industry figured he could make a few extra bucks installing these drain covers. He said 45 minutes in and out and done. When I continued with the conversation into the law, local codes, he was convinced this was not the type of work for him. He called himself a patsy and had no idea what he was getting himself into. He thanked me for giving him the heads up. I certainly wasnt trying to turn him off to more work, but more concerned about putting himself in a place he doesnt want to be.

The bottom line, nothing is set in stone to regulate who does this type of work. I know in CT the laws are getting tighter and they wanted tech 1 tech 2. Operating in some areas require a home improvement license. Buyer beware. Lot of guys out there uninsured and not licensed. Any one care to comment?

Great post trackerm! It sounds like you handled that really well.

What is tech 1 and tech 2?

In Florida it seems that anyone can do the work but someone holding a state certified pool contractor's license has to sign off on the work. Any other info?

Tech 1 and 2 are pool training levels of courses offered by APSP in all states, Tech 1 or 2 are not recognized as a pool repair license. In CT you need an SP-1 or SP-2 plumbing license to repair pools.

I was just contacted today by a local indoor pool with regards to drain covers that were installed by a local underwater pool repairman. Without mentioning the person in questions name this local pool asked me to come to their facility to look at their drains. I was in the area and obliged. They took me to their pool and asked me what did i think? Well, i commented, by looking at the drains from here I can tell they are probably vgb compliant. So I asked what was their specific issue. They mentnioned this diver they found out was uninsured and not licensed. They wanted me to determine if the drains were installed properly. I asked about much did they pay for the drain covers to be installed and they told me the amount, a price that NOBODy in the field would charge. They mentioned this person was high recommended by a local pool company and despite the drain covers installed, they felt that there was a high probability that the drains were installed incorrectly. Turns out, the diver, who made modifications to the drains never submitted plans to the DOH for approval. I guess he told the pool owners that he was "just the diver" and furnished them with some measurements of the drains, but it was not complete. It was highly unlikely this diver did not submit plans to complete the job up to specifications of the vgb and local code.

They asked me to intervene. I respectfully declinded and told them to discuss this with the "professional" they hired at such dirty cheap prices. People are price shoppers, think they get the same job at a low price. just goes to show people only think about quality when there is an issue. Price up front, i dont want to pay a lot, but when there is a problem try and get the gypsy who just installed you drains covers back to make it right. Go on america, put your faith in those who you should have no faith in, but have the lowest price. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR>.
