all forums

i belong to a couple of other discussion groups and i've noticed that the activity level is a little slow right now.
i'm not the brightest bulb on the tree so i look towards the older pro's for that hint or feedback.
i live in a gunite area so that means i'm always working around hard scapes. i would like to know more about the way other guys repair under decks, are you using aircraft cable to locate pipes under ground like i am? i am lucky that i have a bunch of locating equipment that crosses over to leak detection from irrigation locating. do you install schraeder valves to pressure test or do you cut lines and if so what do you carry to repair the access damage you make or is it left for the repair work? how well acepted is VGB in your area?
is a leak trac worth the money? (i'm sure it works well) would i be able to pay for it in one season, my justification for the purchase of any tool.
how are you set-up? your choices for P.T. and silent air sources. tanks or compressor diving. ect.
i was on an irrigation forum last night that seamed to go on forever with new problems and solutions.
thanks.

Where is gunite area? You mention season so I suspect it isn't southwest or west coast.
I use inducers whenever possible and pipe taps 1/4 and 1/2 and 3/4 and plug with threaded plugs and glue.
Co2 and compressor for air and helium when called for.
Lotsa jackhammering and all.

Had an interesting one today. Guy says pool started leaking after grandsons visited. After long time checking and nothing showing, seems one of them stuffed a small rubber duck into spa equalizer line to pool. When pump came on spa filled and leaked out between deck and tile.

Eye, I also work with mostly gunite and pvc. I'm a little curious about the use of aircraft cable to locate. I also do irrigation and domestic slab leaks and carry pipe tracers and cameras, but have always used common sense or tried to connect the dots when it comes to pvc. If you can impart a little wisdom it will be greatly appreciated!! As far as pressure testing I only use compressed air in tanks. I have found helium to be the best gas because the smaller atoms escape the leak faster and make a louder sound and can be picked up with a Leak Hunter Plus.

wolfe, northern ca. - about 9 mo. building season except for this year things are just really slow for all.
gunite pools, fiberglass and then a few liners. i have dug pools for liner only contractors but they don't seem to last very long. the contractors not the pools.
funny thing about kids and animals.
pooltech, you can buy plastic coated 1/8" aircraft cable at a fairly reasonable price and use a vac and string on return lines and the pool pump on suction to pull the cable through. string and mouse first, pull the cable with the string, hook your locator,to a stripped end pinpoint pipe location and depth. it's lots better than a fishtape.
i'm building 2 things for leak work specially, one is a 250gal. silent tank mounted on my older ford f350 (i can fill it at the shop with 175psi) and the other is a portable filter/vac for underwater work. some of the pool cleaning companies use them for spring start ups. i think it will pay for it's self in no time at all.
i've got a bunch of locating equipment and can get location and depth which makes detection and repairs easier. i would like to get a flo meter for installs and calc's but thats later.
one thing i carry in my p.t. kit is a sonoscope (alone it's less than $20, in the kit with gauge and extensions it's under $80) i can use it to check for water movement noise before i pull out the fisher.
i hope this keeps up because i don't know enough to keep me happy.
thanks to both of you!
