helpfull billing tips

Most of my work is for a builder and am now starting to do other work as well. Having a hard time trying to figure out what the best ways to bill are by the hour or a large amount up front for a set amount of hours and do I charge extra if I need to repair. Do I charge more when I have to get in water ect. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

It is a tough call but time is money. I tend to have a heart so am reluctant to quote a high price no matter what the issue is. What I do is give a standard price based on distance and the reported problem. For instance if it is a local job and the customer knows only that they are loosing water. I will quote them my local price telling them that for that price we will work for aprox 1 1/2 hr, if we cant find and fix the problem by then, as in a pool with hundreds of leaks then we go into an hourly rate. They will have to make the decision of paying us or going with a new liner. We have come up with the term "multi leak pool" we tell the customer with a M.L.P. we can not gaurantee our work because there is an outside cause of all your leaks and without identifing it and corecting it they are likely to get more leaks. We call any pool with 10 or more leaks a M.L.P. wo of course are flexible if we find just over 10 we usualy let it slide.
The other call we get is when the customer knows where the leak is and just needs a patch installed "profesionaly" we quote a price for one hours work and try to do the job when we are in their area.

I agree I charge by the job and not by the hour. Usually price includes the repair. I cover up to 10 holes for the same price. I also use the MLP clause and have found pools with multiple holes (yesterday one with 102 holes). Time is money and you should charge accordingly and dont undersell yourself short. Travel time is also factored in. Ultrasonic detection is not included in my base price so I explain everything to the customer up front so they have no misunderstanding before I arrived.
