Leak finding rates?
Just wondering if i can get some feedback on what the going rate is for leak finding in vinyl liner pools. How are you guys charging for the service?
Recently invested in the equipment and find it fairly easy (so far) to locate leaks, but want to get the most back on my investment. I am in the
northeast if that is of any value. Let me know what's going on out there.

we are located in eastern Canada and do a lot of vinyl leaks using a leak trac. We charge $350.00 to locate leak(s). If pool is clean and warm we will
fix one or two holes for that price. We charge extra for cold water ($100.), multiple holes (by time) We refuse to dive in pools that are not healthy
to be in i.e full of algae and/or have no disinfectant level. Hope this helps

I have found rate setting to be a "fluid" process. If your rates are too high you can't maximize your volume. Oh, you'll get jobs at any rate you
set. Some customers will say they don't really care how much you charge, can you be there within the hour? Others will say it's too high, whatever
you charge. If you don't charge enough, you'll never retire or be able to invest your profits.
First you have to get your cost of doing business down on paper. ALL COSTS from gas, insurance, overhead, etc. Most small business people have some
idea of what their real costs are but few know for sure. It takes time to figure in vehicle replacement costs, retirement savings, equipment
replacement costs.
After you spend the time gathering this info, then you set up some scenarios. How much can I do by myself? If you can do 5 jobs a day @ $$$AVG - costs
of doing business. How about 10? If it's just a hobby, you could charge anything you felt like.
When your overhead changes, your pricing will have to also.
To keep your price on a higher level, you could provide "value added services" like chemical instruction, cleaning that dirty pool full of algae,
etc. Hope that helps some...

You said you are from the northeast so take a look at Dosil's web site for leak repair in new jersey. It covers a full range of services, pricing,
extra costs for travel, winter diving, defined dates for in season-winter season, extras: excess holes over a certain #, photos of damage, limits on
dirty diving, print there fax out for a sample of how they collect job data too
www.1800njdiver.com
I'm in CT and cover CT and sw NY, my rates and extras are pretty similiar to Dosil's in nj

We charge a service call with a minimum of one hour labor. Hourly rate is $90/hr. We charge $125 for the use of the leak detector. If scuba
equipment is used an additional $80 is charged. Any materials used to do the repair is billed as needed.

$135 for the first hour and $85.00 after the first. I have never taken longer than 1.5 hours on liner pool.
In ground pipe leaks around 4-6 hours located. Repairs extra.
This is my rate for back yard pools.

the trouble with charging by the hour is that the better you are the less you make. I believe we should charge a flat fee that in effect rewards us
for being quick and competent. If you never take more than one and a half hours, make that your flat rate and be rewarded for your skill above and
beyond your hourly rate.

suggestion: ask your customer the normal questions. Pool only or pool/spa combo? Any extra water features like jets, waterfalls, sheer descent? Any
floor cleaning system (i.e. Caretaker or Paramount)? After you know the answers, call your local competitors (but not from your business line) and ask
them what they charge to find the leak. Probably the best thing is to ask them for a pool/spa combo. Get the price and then ask how much extra for
floor jets. Realistically, they should WANT to give you the correct info so that you don't UNDERCHARGE and take business away from them based on
price. I've seen guys whose only competition is ALD and they charge HALF of them. Why? They're giving money away. Strive to not be the cheap guy or
the "high guy". You'll make plenty of money, but not be CRAZY working 28 days/month but not making good money. Remember. You're not in this
BUSINESS to set a record for # of leaks. There is no award for that. We're in it to make a good living for ourselves. If all you do is find/fix leaks
cheaply, you'll be busy, but not have much of a life. Ex. 100 leaks/month. At $100/leak=$10,000. At $200/leak you need 50 leaks (HALF the work!) and
make the same amount of money. Quantity isn't important. Gross isn't important. NET is important.
